Schaeffer, Claude

(1898-1982)
   archaeologist
Born in Strasbourg, Claude Schaeffer took part in the archaeological excavations at Ras Shamra (ougarit) in 1929 in Syria, where he discovered thousands of tablets written in the cuneiform script. He also found five levels of civilization, from the Neolithic to the 13th-century b.c.e., as well as temples to Dagon and Baal, palaces, fortifications, and votive tombs. The tables included the ancient poems Baal and Anat, The Epic of Yam, The Legend of Keret, The Legend of Danil, and a version of The Legend of Gilgamesh, and make up the only known Canaanite literary texts, all dating from the 14th century b.c.e. Schaeffer also excavated at Engomi, on Cyprus. In 1954, he was named professor at the collège de france.
